When grammatically challenged, “user-friendly” gubernatorial candidate Dicky Pilager launches his morning-in-America campaign for the citizens of the New West, things take an unexpected turn. Fishing for votes on camera, Pilager reels in a dead body from a scenic mountain lake. His ferocious campaign manager Chuck Raven hires journalist turned private detective Danny O’Brien to investigate potential links between the corpse and the Pilager family’s many enemies. True to the film noir tradition, Danny’s investigation pulls him deeper and deeper into a complex web of influence and corruption, implicating high stakes lobbyists, media conglomerates, environmental plunderers, and the exploitation of undocumented migrant workers. A remarkable ensemble cast includes Chris Cooper, Kris Kristofferson, Danny Huston, Daryl Hannah, Richard Dreyfuss, and Maria Bello. Released in Election Year 2004, before the political corpses of that era had all surfaced. (Any resemblance between Dicky Pilager and former President George W. Bush is unavoidable.)
