Shepard Fairey is the artist behind the John Sayles Independent artwork.
He is an American contemporary street artist, graphic designer, activist, illustrator and founder of OBEY Clothing. He is known many other pieces such as the culturally iconic Barack Obama Hope poster. In 2017, Fairey collaborated with the non-profit Amplifier Foundation to create his We the People series, depicting women of Native American, African American, Latin and Muslim heritage with slogans such as "Defend Dignity" in protest of Donald Trump's inauguration. Fairey is known for partnering with reputable non-profit organizations and offering his artwork for free as incentive for the public to engage in polication activism with him.
