BAM Cinematek is screening MATEWAN (1987) on Monday, July 27 as part of BAM’s Indie 80’s series. Maggie Renzi, who produced and acted in the film, will be on hand to introduce it!
Matewan, featuring Chris Cooper, James Earl Jones, Mary McDonnell and David Strathairn, tells the story of a small town in 1920’s West Virginia that erupts into conflict upon unionization of its coal miners. Based on real events, the film explores the racial tensions, corruption, betrayal, and eventually, incredible violence, that their movement explodes.
The folks at BAM laud, “With an authentic sense of regional Americana, director John Sayles’ vivid drama has the mythic power of a classical Western and the simple poetry of a folk tale.”
Here’s your chance to see one of the harder-to-find Sayles films in all its 35mm glory.
