Good Morning, John Sayles fans and friends!
John and Maggie are winging their way back from Italy today, where they’ve been relaxing, sightseeing, and catching up with old friends. They’ve sent along some great photos of their trip for me to share on the blog here.

John with Mayes Rubeo, the costume designer from "Sunshine State." They found "The Help" playing in Spoleto; Mark Ricker, who won an Art Directors Guild Award for his work on "The Help" was the Production Designer on "Sunshine State." Mayes recently did costume design for "John Carter."
Traveling in Matera
So, if I’m not in these pictures, you’re probably wondering who I am.
My name is Chelsea, and I’ll be handling the majority of blogging duties around the site going forward. John and Maggie have so many great projects in the works that they don’t always get enough time to share them — that’s where I come in. I’ve known them both since I was eight years old, so I’ve been entrusted with passing along news, photos, behind-the-scenes info, and other fun stuff so they can keep writing, producing, and generally making amazing movies.
In the interest of absolute transparency, going forward each blog entry will clearly show the author’s name.
On the occasions when Maggie or John write, you will see one of their names as the author. When I write, you will see “John Sayles Blog” as the author.
All right! I’m glad that’s all cleared up, because lots of exciting things are happening in the month of April and it’s high time the word got out!
Starting TONIGHT, Duke University in North Carolina is screening three of John’s films (“Matewan,” “Sunshine State,” and “Amigo”) in advance of honoring him with the Duke Leaf Award for Lifetime Environmental Achievement in the Fine Arts.
The screenings are tonight, tomorrow night, and next Wednesday, respectively. The awards ceremony will be held at 2pm on Saturday, April 21st. You can find out all the information about the Duke Leaf Award events by checking out our “Upcoming Events” page.
